Barley yield per hectare: national averages and how to read them

In short

Barley yielded 3.2 tonnes per hectare worldwide in 2024 according to FAOSTAT, against 3.6 for wheat, with national averages among the countries tabled from 1.6 in Uzbekistan to 6.4 in Germany.

In Kazakhstan barley out-yielded wheat in each of the last three seasons. Planva keeps yield per field and season next to the variety, so you can see which barley fields beat the national figure.

Barley yield by country

National averages from FAOSTAT in tonnes per hectare of harvested area. The last column is the lowest and highest year from 2020 to 2024.

There is no single rule. Wheat leads in most rows, and by a wide margin in Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan runs the other way: barley was ahead in 2022, 2023 and 2024. FAOSTAT does not say why, and a national figure cannot, because it mixes zones and crops of different winter and spring types. Look at your own fields, not at the ranking.

Reading the average

  • Harvested area. FAOSTAT divides production by harvested area. Sown ground that was not harvested does not lower it.
  • Season swings. Armenia ran from 0.8 to 2.1 t/ha and Kyrgyzstan from 1.2 to 2.5 inside five seasons. One strong year is not a base for a plan.
  • Revisions. FAO can revise earlier years, so cite the release you used.

Tracking your own barley fields

  1. Divide harvest by harvested area. Tonnes over hectares gives t/ha. Multiply by 10 for centners per hectare.
  2. Keep it per field and per season. A farm average hides the field that pulls it down.
  3. Keep the variety and seed record with it. Without them a good or poor result cannot be traced to a cause.
  4. Compare with the same field first. Its earlier seasons say more than a national table.

The yield calculation guide covers how to get a hectare figure from a sample, and wheat yield gives the same table for wheat.

How this works in Planva

  • Crop rotation by season. Crop, variety, sowing and harvest dates, yield and total harvest for each field.
  • Seed catalogue. Reproduction, germination, 1000-seed weight, maturity group, purity and tillering for each seed record.
  • Plan and actual. Agroplans hold seed by rate or quantity, planned and applied.
  • Rotation map. Filter by crop and print to PDF or JPEG with an area summary.
