What farming without monitoring actually costs
Our agronomists spent decades scouting fields the classic way: a UAZ, a notebook, and a good eye. So when a farmer tells us “we manage fine without monitoring,” we don’t argue — he really does manage. We just know exactly what that management costs, because we used to pay it ourselves.
You already have monitoring — an expensive kind
Every farm monitors its fields. The question is only the instrument. Driving the perimeter twice a week is a monitoring system with specific specs:
- It sees the edges of a field, and almost never the middle.
- Its refresh rate is once or twice a week — in a good week without breakdowns.
- Its records live in a notebook and in one person’s head.
- Its cost is fuel, a vehicle, and the most expensive resource on the farm — the agronomist’s day.
A satellite pass every 3–5 days sees every hectare including the middle, remembers everything, and costs less than the fuel line for field rounds. It doesn’t replace the agronomist — it decides where the agronomist should go first.
The four holes in a “no system” season
1. Problems get found late
Waterlogging in the middle of a 120-ha field, a weed patch behind the tree line, a drill that seeded thin because a coulter clogged — from the road these are invisible for weeks. Every week of delay converts a cheap fix into an expensive one; we broke down that price in the crop protection math.
2. Uneven fields get averaged decisions
Without a vegetation map, the field is one number: “looks okay.” Fertilizer and protection get bought and applied for the average — overspending on strong zones and underfeeding weak ones at the same time.
3. Disputes get settled by memory
The contractor says he sprayed the whole field; the yield map hints otherwise. The operator says the drill worked all shift; fuel says it stood for three hours. Without tracks and records, every dispute is settled by whoever argues louder.
4. The farm has no memory
When the agronomist changes, the fields’ history leaves in his notebook. Which corner always dries out first, where the salinity patch creeps, what actually grew on field 14 four years ago — this knowledge costs seasons to rebuild.
The satellite didn’t show me anything I couldn’t have found on foot. It showed me where to walk — that was the difference.
Why Excel and messengers don’t plug the holes
Most “no monitoring” farms actually run a patchwork: Excel for operations, a messenger for photos, paper maps in the glovebox. The patchwork fails not because people are careless, but because the pieces don’t talk to each other:
- A photo in a chat has no coordinates and no field — a month later it’s just a picture of wheat.
- Excel knows the plan but doesn’t know the fact — it can’t see tracks or imagery.
- Paper maps don’t update; the person who drew them eventually leaves.
What honestly changes in the first season
We won’t promise a yield jump — weather and prices will keep doing what they do. What a first monitoring season reliably delivers is smaller and more useful:
The agronomist stops driving circles and starts driving to targets. Treatments happen on zones, and there’s a record of them. Yes — the smaller the farm, the more painful every wasted pass and lost tonne. Subscriptions scale with area, so the payback logic is the same as on 10,000 ha; only the absolute numbers differ.
